Holidays in Portugal to save money? Study shows it's the case for over half of Portuguese people.

According to a study, more than half of Portuguese people (55%) did not travel abroad for their summer holidays due to financial reasons.

The study is from the latest Observador Cetelem, a commercial brand of the BNP Paribas Personal Finance group, in a statement to Notícias ao Minuto, and also explains that 49% of Portuguese used credit to go on vacation.

Still, the percentage of Portuguese people intending to resort to credit for this purpose decreased compared to previous years.

In this summer period, 55% of the Portuguese population decided to stay in Portugal for vacation, with 28% indicating it was due to the type of vacation they wanted.

The study also indicates that for 32% of respondents, the attractiveness of the destination is what most influences the choice of a destination outside of Portugal. 30% opt for a foreign destination because it is the type of vacation they want, and 29% for financial cost.

The percentage of Portuguese people intending to pay for their vacations with a credit card was 49%, compared to 58% in 2021 and 64% in 2022 (but 10% higher than in 2020).

The study data also concludes that the amount that the surveyed Portuguese plan to spend on vacation is 1,005.57 euros - which means that 1 in every 4 Portuguese plans to spend more than last year (54 euros more than in 2022 and 347 euros less than in 2019).

Still, where the Portuguese intend to spend more is on accommodation, on average more than 450 euros.

In addition, "the majority of Portuguese choose Portugal to spend their summer holidays, with 37% of Portuguese planning to vacation abroad, surpassing pre-pandemic values (30% in 2019)," the news reads.
