The first step for any foreign citizen arriving in Portugal is to obtain the Tax Identification Number, popularly known as NIF. Without this number, they cannot sign their employment contract, cannot rent a house, and are unable to open a bank account.
The request must be made at an online or in-person Finance Desk. If you do not yet officially reside in Portuguese territory, you will need the help of a tax representative, who is a citizen with an address in the country and who is responsible for receiving your notifications from the State.
With the Tax Identification Number (NIF) and the employment contract signed, the next step is registering with Social Security to obtain the NISS. This identification number is truly vital for your future in Portugal.
The NISS ensures that the discounts taken from your salary go directly to the State coffers. It is this monthly contribution that entitles you to protection against unemployment, medical assistance at public health centers, and protection in case of illness or work accident. You can start this online request on the official portal of Social Security or go in person to a service counter. (https://www.seg-social.pt/ptss/id/pedido-niss/informacoes-gerais)
In order for your new company to transfer your salary at the end of the month, you will need a national bank account. The account opening process requires the client to prove their identity and the source of their income.
With your passport, tax identification number, social security number, and work contract in hand, choose the financial institution that offers the lowest maintenance fees. Many banks also require proof of your address in Portugal, so presenting a lease agreement or a certificate from the parish council of your area of residence will be extremely useful at this final moment.
